Odisha Records 33% Polling Till 1 PM, Ex-Gratia To Be Given To Deceased Female Polling Officer’s Next Of Kin: CEO

Bhubaneswar: Chief Electoral Officer Surendra Kumar informed that Odisha had recorded 33% voter turnout till 1 pm in the afternoon today during the second phase polls.

The polling percentages are as follows: Kandhamal- 24%, Sundargarh- 30%, Bolangir- 28%, Bargarh- 34% and Aska- 35%

He said, “This is the tentative figure as there are many inaccessible and internet shadow areas, from where the data has not reached us yet.”

Briefing the media on EVM glitches, he said, “Like always, there were misconnections and connection errors in some machines. But, the section officers replaced the machines and currently polling is going on smoothly everywhere.”

When asked about the female polling officer who was shot dead by Maoists in Kandhamal on Wedensday, Kumar explained, “It is a deplorable act. According to EC guidelines, ex-gratia of Rs 30 lakh will be provided to deceased Sanjukta Digal’s next of kin.”

He added, “Polling officials reached the booth in Kandhamal where vehicles had been torched on Wednesday. The polling party is safe and extra forces have been deployed in the area. IG of Operations is also camping in Kandhamal currently.”

Kumar also said that Election Commission was looking into the matter of IAS poll official Mohammed Mohsin, who was suspensed for checking Narendra Modi’s helicopter in Sambalpur.

People of five Parliamentary constituencies of Aska, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Bargarh and Sundargarh and 35 Assembly seats in Odisha are electing their representatives today in the second-phase polls.
