Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government today informed that 16,372 deaths have been reported in the State in the last five years due to various disasters.
Replying to a written question by BJP MLA Kusum Tete, Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management Sudam Marndi told the Assembly that Mayurbhanj district has registered the highest number of 1,444 deaths during the period while Ganjam stood second in the row with 1,162 casualties. Similarly, Balasore remained in the third spot with 1,139 deaths due to various notified disasters.
Likewise, Keonjhar reported 1,115 deaths between 2018 and 2013, the minister informed.
The notified disasters are- lightning, fire accident, cyclone, boat capsize, drowning, flood, heat-wave, whirlwind, Heavy rain, and snakebite.
Marndi said the government has been providing compensatory financial assistance to the families of the deceased as per the guidelines of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
The government provides Rs 50,000 for the death due to heat wave and Rs 4 lakh for death due to other disasters, he said.
