Biju Patnaik Memorial To Be Removed As Swargadwar Gets Revamped

Bhubaneswar: In a major move by the State Government, the iconic Biju Patnaik memorial was decided to be removed from Puri Swargadwar as part of its development. A Rs 5 crore project was announced In a high-level meeting presided by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Lok Seva Bhawan here on Friday; where the modalities of the project were discussed.

On this occasion, CM Naveen said, "Biju Babu (Biju Patnaik) resides in the heart of millions of Odia people. The memories of Biju Babu which was there at Swargadwara will be dedicated to the service of people of Odisha."

The State Government decided to renovate and develop Swargadwara, the holy cremation ground at Puri, which suffered major damages in the severe cyclonic storm Fani which hit Odisha on May 3.

The project involves setting up state-of-the-art facilities for cremation and pall-bearers. Besides, all-weather cremation facilities will be set-up for the convenience of the public.

Describing Swargdwara as a holy place of faith, the Chief Minister urged Odia people to join hands in its development.

The funds for the development project will be made available from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) and will be carried out with the assistance of Phoenix Foundation.

"Rest shelter for the pallbearers, extensive plantation drive and facilities for collection and preservation of ashes are some of the major works which would be taken up," senior BJD leader Sanjay Dasburma said at a press meet today.

On this occasion, Panchayati Raj Minister, Sports Minister, Development Commissioner, heads of several departments, Puri Collector and president of Phoenix Foundation were present.
