Bhubaneswar: Beware! Not using a mask, spitting at public places, violation of social distancing norms and other matters provided in Covid-19 Regulations, 2020 can land you up in jail for two years or a Rs 1 lakh fine or both.
Alarmed over the unrelenting surge in Covid-19 cases in the State and lackadaisical attitude of the people towards adherence to regulations to control the virus from spreading, Odisha Government has decided to bring an ordinance to enhance punishment for non-compliance of the regulations.
Sharing details the proposals adopted at the State Cabinet meeting with reporters on Wednesday, Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy informed that the State Cabinet in order to ensure strict observance of Covid-19 regulations to contain the spread of the virus has decided to enhance the punishment as provided in the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 to imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend up to Rs one lakh or with both.
Tripathy has said that as the State Assembly is not in session, the necessary amendment to the Act in its application to the State of Odisha will be effected through the promulgation of an ordinance.
