Bhubaneswar: The Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch has seized around 4.82 kilograms of pangolin scales with the arrest of a wildlife criminal near Balichua village under Sarat police limits of Mayurbhanj district on Friday.
On the basis of reliable information about a deal of sale of pangolin scales, the STF team had conducted a raid with the help of forest officials of Baripada Forest Division near the village and apprehended one accused identified as Suren Purty.
During the search, 4.82 kilogram of pangolin scales and other incriminating materials were seized from his possession. Purty could not produce any valid authority in support of the possession of pangolin scales, for which he was detained and handed over to forest officials for necessary legal action at their end.
During the last one year, a special drive against wildlife criminals/poachers has been launched by the STF. The unit has seized as many as 14 leopard skins, nine elephant tusks, two deer skins, three live pangolins, and 10 kilogram of pangolin scales and
arrested 27 wildlife criminals.
