Bhubaneswar: In response to the worsening flood situation in the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga river basins, the Odisha government’s Water Resources Department has issued a directive to strengthen flood management efforts.

Chief Engineer (Drainage) Abinash Roul has been instructed to proceed immediately to the Balasore headquarters to closely monitor the flood conditions affecting the Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, and Jalaka rivers. Roul will coordinate with field officers, district authorities, and local administrations to ensure timely and effective flood mitigation.

“In view of flood situation in Subarnarekha & Budhabalnga Basin Odisha, Sri Abinash Roul, CE, Drainage (Mob No.9437034763) shall move to Balasore Head Quarter immediately to monitor overall flood situation in Subarnarekha, Budhabalnga & Jalaka river & interact with field level officers as well as district & local administration for smooth management of flood,” the order stated.

Additionally, officers from the drainage and canal divisions in Bhadrak, Balasore, and Morada have been instructed to report to Roul and assist local teams in executing flood control measures.

Enhanced Coordination and On-Ground Vigilance

Water Resources (WR) field officials are also in close coordination with their counterparts in Jharkhand, particularly concerning water discharge from upstream barrages. The discharge from the Galludihi Barrage has been reduced, easing some pressure on the downstream flow into Odisha.

Field staff are maintaining round-the-clock vigilance at vulnerable embankment points in both Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts. Flood-fighting materials have been pre-positioned to respond swiftly to any breaches or emergencies.

District administrations have begun public announcements, urging residents in low-lying areas to relocate to the nearest cyclone shelters. People are being advised to carry essential materials and remain alert.

Flood-fighting efforts are also actively underway at embankments in the Basta area near Saradiha, where high water levels continue to pose a threat to nearby communities.
