Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards establishing Odisha as a premier global tourism destination, the state government has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with renowned institutions. The MoU signing ceremony took place at Lok Seva Bhavan, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, Minister of Odia Language, Literature & Culture Department Suryabanshi Suraj, and Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja.
The MoUs aim to promote heritage conservation, adventure tourism, and Buddhist pilgrimage circuits in the state. According to Parida, these agreements represent Odisha’s comprehensive vision to conserve its rich heritage, diversify tourism offerings, and expand its global presence. She emphasized the need to implement these projects efficiently to achieve meaningful outcomes.
The three partnerships are with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS), Goa, and the Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International (LBDFI). Here’s a breakdown of each MoU
Heritage Conservation with IIT-M
Odisha will utilise advanced scientific techniques for structural audits and conservation of heritage monuments through its partnership with IIT-M. This collaboration includes detailed documentation, material testing, geo-technical investigations, and preparation of project reports, as well as sustainable reuse plans and project management consultancy support.
Adventure Tourism with NIWS
The partnership with NIWS, Goa, aims to introduce globally accepted safety standards, safety audits, and capacity-building programs for adventure tourism operators, lifeguards, and service providers. With Odisha’s extensive coastline and abundant water resources, the government sees immense potential for developing adventure tourism, creating livelihood opportunities for the state’s youth.
Buddhist Tourism with LBDFI
The MoU with LBDFI focuses on reviving Odisha’s Buddhist heritage and pilgrimage tourism. Key initiatives include organizing annual prayer ceremonies at prominent Buddhist sites like Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, Lalitagiri, and Dhauli. The partnership will also enhance visitor amenities, develop digital engagement infrastructure, and curate cultural and academic programs showcasing Odisha’s Buddhist legacy.
