Bhubaneswar: In a significant stride towards a low-carbon future, Odisha has taken a landmark step by announcing its Green Hydrogen Policy, positioning itself as a frontrunner among Indian states in the push for clean energy and industrial decarbonization.

The announcement came during a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, who also holds the Energy portfolio. Senior officials from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and key industry stakeholders participated in the deliberations.

The state government outlined an ambitious roadmap focused on accelerating renewable energy growth through large-scale green hydrogen production, floating solar projects, pumped storage hydropower initiatives, and deployment of battery energy storage systems.

Officials emphasized that the policy aims to create a robust ecosystem for green hydrogen, including incentives for production, storage, and utilization across energy-intensive sectors such as steel, aluminium, and chemicals.

Deputy Chief Minister Singh Deo highlighted that the initiative is expected to attract substantial investments from both domestic and international players. Industry proposals for green hydrogen production in the state have already reached significant scales, particularly around ports like Gopalpur and Paradip.

“This policy reinforces Odisha’s commitment to becoming India’s green industrial hub,” Singh Deo stated, adding that the focus on renewable energy will not only support industrial growth but also enhance disaster-resilient infrastructure and foster innovation in clean technologies.

Key targets discussed include scaling up renewable energy capacity and green hydrogen output in the coming years, aligning with national goals under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The move is expected to generate employment, strengthen energy security, and position Odisha as a preferred destination for sustainable investments.

Stakeholders from CII welcomed the development, noting strong industry interest and readiness to collaborate on project implementation. The policy is seen as a timely boost for Odisha’s transition from traditional energy sources while leveraging its natural resources and strategic coastal advantages.
