Odisha: Teacher Turns Santa, Distributes Goodies, Spreads Smiles In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Christmas is just around the corner and the season of happiness, celebration and gifting has arrived. Amidst the Christmas celebration, apart from the baby Jesus, a major attraction is the myth around Santa Claus.

Santa is traditionally, a big-puffed man. He is clad in red robes with snowy white beard and a huge bag full of gifts for those who have successfully avoided the ‘naughty list’. Breaking the stereotype is Jyotirmayee Rana.

Every year, Jyotirmayee dresses up as a Santa and makes sure to visit at least five-six pre-schools. She gifts the little ones a variety of toys and chocolates.

“I have been keeping up with my Santa act since last four years and hope to continue it in future. My only aim is to keep the Christmas spirit alive to spread joy and attempt to bring smile on the innocent faces”, said the Santa who is a teacher by profession and works at a private school in Bhubaneswar.

She adds that even though we know that Santa is not real but that must not stop us from enjoying Christmas spirit at its fullest.

OMMCOM NEWS caught up with a few parents who appreciated this unique gesture. Anupam Nayak said, “We are happy that kids are getting to experience this positivity. They have been very excited since yesterday and had been waiting for Santa Claus.”

“She comes every year and not just distributes gifts but also participate in other fun activities. It is a great initiative and I sincerely hope other schools follow pattern,” said another parent Sweta Mishra.

Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, is a legendary figure who is said to bring gifts to the homes of well-behaved children on the night of Christmas Eve or during the early morning hours of Christmas. And Jyotirmayee’s voluntary act to bring smiles on faces of little children is praiseworthy as well as inspiring.
