**Bhubaneswar: ** Odisha Government to host ‘International Dam Safety Conference’ on February 13 and 14 here in the State capital city in which hundreds of delegates both from India and abroad will participate in it and deliberate on issues relating to the need of the hour.

This was informed by Central Water Commission (CWC) Chairman S. Masood Husain at the State Secretariat here today after calling on the Chief Minister for the purpose.

The CWC Chairman said, “International Dam Safety Conference will be held here in Bhubaneswar on February 13 and 14. The dam safety programme is of Government of India’s Ministry of Water Resources.
This will be the fifth conference. A World Bank programme on dam safety is underway in the country. This programme is based on the safety and maintenance issues of the old dams. And this International Conference is a part of it.”

He added, “Experts, water professionals and dam safety professionals of more than 20 foreign countries will participate in it. Four such conferences have already been organized earlier. The conference in Odisha will be the fifth one. It is being jointly organized by Water Resources Department, Odisha, Central Water Commission and World Bank. Water Resources Department, Odisha is the main organizer.”

“Today I came here to invite the Chief Minister for the inaugural function of the international conference on behalf of the Central Water Commission. I’m very happy that the Chief Minister has agreed. This entire conference will be held here under his guidance,” he stated.
“As Hirakud Dam is the lifeline of Odisha, it is also a participant in this dam safety conference. Hence, it is a very important conference,” the CWC Chairman remarked.

Odisha Water Resources Principal Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena also informed media, “On February 13 and 14, International Dam Safety Conference will be held here in Bhubaneswar jointly organized by Central Water Commission (CWC), Government of Odisha and World Bank.”

He added, “Over 700 delegates will attend from India and abroad. Deliberations will be held on various angles of dam safety. Also some practical issues will be discussed as case studies.”

“Hence for that conference, CWC Chairman has come here to invite the Chief Minister for the inaugural session,” stated he.

On being queried what the conference would help Odisha, he replied, “What activities on dam safety have been taken up in different countries around the globe will be discussed in the conference. Thus, the valuable presentations will benefit the engineers of our nation.”

“This conference will have some good case studies. For example, a dam failed in Burma. In another country also a dam failed. Dam failure cases will be discussed in this conference,” the Water Resources Secretary mentioned.
