Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission of India has directed Odisha to commence a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls from April 1, with preparatory work already underway across the state to ensure a streamlined and transparent process ahead of forthcoming elections.
Announcing the exercise on Saturday, Chief Electoral Officer R Santhanagopalan said a comprehensive mapping exercise is being carried out to facilitate smooth implementation of the revision. The groundwork is aimed at identifying polling stations, rationalising electoral segments where necessary, and ensuring that the revision process proceeds without logistical hurdles.
Santhanagopalan urged citizens to verify their names and personal details in the 2002 Special Intensive Revision list and promptly report any discrepancies to the concerned authorities. He emphasised that public participation is critical to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the electoral database.
The Special Intensive Revision seeks to clean up the electoral rolls by removing duplicate and ineligible entries, correcting errors in voter details, and enrolling eligible citizens who may have been left out. Officials said the exercise would strengthen the credibility of the electoral process and enhance voter confidence.
In a communication dated February 19, 2026, the Election Commission of India instructed chief electoral officers of several states and Union Territories, including Odisha, to expedite preparatory measures for the revision. The directive underscores the Commission’s focus on ensuring updated and error-free electoral rolls before the next round of elections.
Authorities are expected to roll out awareness campaigns in the coming weeks to encourage maximum public engagement in the verification process.
