Bhubaneswar: The budget session of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on Thursday, three days before its scheduled conclusion.

According to reports, the House witnessed a marathon discussion on the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Bill that lasted over 12 hours. The bill was passed at around 4:29 am today in the Assembly with the ruling party’s majority, despite opposition from the BJD. The ruling party had proposed 18 amendments, but 12 were opposed by the BJD party.

It is learnt that BJD MLA Arun Sahoo questioned the validity of the bill stating that it was an amendment to the 1989 bill, which was introduced in 2024. He added that the bill’s legitimacy would be debated in the Supreme Court in the future.

It is pertinent to mention that the Assembly’s proceedings began on Wednesday at 10:30 am and continued until 7:05 am on Thursday. The House also witnessed heated discussions between the ruling party and the opposition.
