Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Monday arrested Dr. Sanjib Kumar Kar, an ophthalmologist at the Subarnapur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,500 from a complainant for conducting cataract surgery of his uncle.
The said surgery is done free of cost in government hospitals across the state. In spite of this, Dr. Kar was demanding a bribe from patients for doing the surgery. The complainant, being a poor man, requested Dr Kar several times to do the cataract surgery for his uncle, an ailing old man, and an octogenarian, but he insisted on the bribe amount to be paid before the surgery. Finding no other way, the complainant informed the Odisha Vigilance about the matter.
Dr Kar was nabbed by a Vigilance team on Monday while accepting a bribe from the complainant.
The entire bribe money has been recovered and seized from the accused Dr Kar.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are underway at three locations of Dr Kar in Bolangir and Subarnapur districts.
A case has been registered against Dr Kar in this connection at the Sambalpur Vigilance police station under Section 7 Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Investigation into the matter is underway is in progress against the accused Dr Sanjib Kar and a detailed report is awaited.
