Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department regional office here Friday forecast fairly widespread thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, isolated hail, heavy rain and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph in some districts of Odisha for the next five days under the influence of low-level north–south wind discontinuity/trough and middle and upper tropospheric strong western disturbances.
The weather office had advised people to keep a watch on the weather and take safe shelter during thunderstorm activity for protection from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. It has also advised regulation of harvesting of Rabi crops.
Weather forecast and warning
Day 1: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms is likely to occur in most places over the districts of north Odisha and many places over the districts of south Odisha.
The MeT has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms with lightning, hail and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nayagarh and Khurda.
Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm) may occur at one or two places likely over districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal districts.
Day 2: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is likely to occur at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha. A yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and at one or two places over the remaining districts of Odisha.
Day 3: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and dry weather is likely to prevail over the remaining districts of Odisha.
Day 4: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of south coastal Odisha, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput, while dry weather is likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.
Day 5: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput and dry weather is likely to prevail over the remaining districts of Odisha.
