Bhubaneswar: Odisha witnessed about a 14.65 per cent rise in crime in 2022. According to a white paper released by the state Home Department on Monday, 1,78,190 criminal cases were registered in Odisha in 2022, including 1,379 murders and 3,184 rape cases. Of the 1,78,190 criminal cases, police have filed chargesheets in 1,18,547 cases.
The white paper further revealed that 2,998 cases of robbery, 14,893 cases of theft, 626 cases of dacoity, 2,248 cases of riot, 5,352 cases of cheating, 11,773 cases of motor vehicle accidents and another 1,30,380 miscellaneous cases were registered across the state in 2022.
Similarly, out of the total 1,379 murder cases, chargesheets have been filed in 640 cases. The police have filed chargesheets in 2,237 rape cases out of the total of 3,184 cases till the end of 2022, the white paper added.
As many as 1,983 cyber crime cases were registered in Odisha in 2022, the white paper says, adding that a total of 441 accused have been arrested in connection with the cyber crimes in the state.
On the other hand, the white paper points out, “The state witnessed a decline in Maoist activities in 2022. Altogether 27 cases of Maoist violence were registered in Odisha in 2022 and seven Maoists were eliminated, while 12 others were arrested in police action during the period. Additionally, three Maoists have laid down their arms. Eight civilians were killed and three security personnel were martyred in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in Odisha last year,” the white paper read.
Interestingly, no incident of political violence and communalism was reported in Odisha in 2022, the white paper claimed. Moreover, the overall law and order situation in Odisha remained peaceful throughout the year and the three-tier panchayat and urban local body (ULB) elections were conducted in a peaceful manner in 2022, the white paper said.
According to the white paper, the law and order situation in the state was in general peaceful in 2022.
