Bhubaneswar: Protesting against the killing of farmers in police firing in Madhya Pradesh recently and later the arrest of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi while he was reportedly on his way to express his condolences and solidarity there the next day, Odisha unit Youth Congress activists on Saturday hurled eggs at Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh vehicle’s near the State Guest House here.

The Youth Congress activists also showed black flags to the Union Agriculture Minister. Police at once apprehended some agitating Youth Congress activists.

Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi informed media, "5 Youth Congress activists, including Odisha Youth Congress president Lokanath Maharathi, have been arrested for the egg attack and black flag protest against the Union Agriculture Minister."

As per reports, a brigade of 50-60 Youth Congress activists, divided into two groups, attempted the protest.

The incident occurred soon after Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh left the State Guest House and was heading to Jatani to attend a programme.

Notably, the Union Minister is on his Odisha tour to grace BJP-led Central Government’s ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ event here in the State.

Senior Congress leader Pradip Majhi accused the union government of being anti-farmer.

"The egg attack was carried out to sensitise them, so that the problems of the farmers of Odisha and other parts of the country are addressed," said Majhi.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Odisha in-charge Arun Singh said the egg attack was carried out at the behest of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), as the Congress had no power to attack after having been decimated in the country.
