Bhubaneswar: The Last rites of the 26-year-old Odisha youth who was murdered in Karnataka’s Koppal district after he and two others were allegedly pushed into a canal by three assailants was performed at the Mission Campus in G Udayagiri, following Christian rituals.
As per reports, Bibash Nayak from Derabadi village in Kandhamal district was among three men thrown into the canal on Thursday night when they tried to prevent the assailants from raping an Israeli tourist and a local homestay owner. While his companions, Daniel from the US and Pankaj from Maharashtra, managed to escape, Bibash’s body was recovered by Karnataka police on Saturday.
His father, Bijay Nayak, left for Karnataka after getting information about the incident from the Karnataka police. His body was brought back to his village on Sunday afternoon. His funeral procession, attended by thousands of mourners, began around 4 pm. Bibhas’s friends, relatives, and family members, apart from fathers of the church, were present to bid their final farewell, sources said.
The atmosphere in the locality was sombre, with a pall of gloom hanging over the region.
It is pertinent to mention that Bibash was working in a hospital in New Delhi, while his parents were staying in Agra, for the last several years.
