**Bhubaneswar:** Wonder-boy Babulu Munda, a 13-yr-old tribal orphan boy hailing from Odisha’s Barbil in Keonjhar district has a whopping 17 medals from around 21 events at the State and National level under his belt. He has covered a long distance from the tribal dominated region to 7th World Wushu Championship being held at Brasilia in July this year.
This young talent was spotted in 2011 and got training under coach Pankaj Kumar Mahanta, an Asian Indoor Games kickboxing medalist. Munda’s enviable knack for martial arts and quick learning attitude impressed the coach. And after a six-month rigorous training, Babulu won his first medal at the age of 6, a silver medal at the State level championship.
“On a daily basis I impart training to students at the school. But I was overwhelmed with the impressive accuracy of this boy (Babulu) in my first session with him. Initially I thought it could be a coincidence. But in my every session he came out with flying colours and consistency”, said Mahanta.
Babulu, now a well-known figure in the sub-junior category, has overcome a life full of hardships. Being an orphan, this talented boy was brought up in abject penury by his grandmother, a daily wage labourer.
Impressed by the masterful performance of Babulu at such tender age, JSPL Foundation extended out all support to him and facilitated his participation in State and National level Championships.
The tribal boy’s stunning performance at the Sub-Junior National Coaching Camp at SAI, Bhopal in May this year confirmed berth for his Brazil tour.
