Bhubaneswar: Raimati Ghiuria, popular as Odisha’s Millet Queen, has been invited to China.
Earlier, she had participated in BRICS CCI WE, the Women Empowerment vertical of the BRICS Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She was one of the VIPs at this year’s G20 Summit where the ‘International Year of Millets’ was celebrated to revive the interest in millets that have been edged out by grains like wheat and rice over the years. During the G20 Summit, Raimati had the opportunity to meet President Draupadi Murmu.
At BRICS CCI WE and G20 Summit, Raimati had the privilege of participating in a prominent international gathering, where she represented her village and underscored the significance of millet.
Influenced by Raimati who has trained hundreds of women in cultivating rare millets, delegates of China present at BRICS CCI WE has invited her to their country for a talk on millet, said sources.
Sources said, BRICS CCI WE has recently hosted its 4th summit on the theme ‘The Changing Narrative: Women Development to Women-led Development’.
The summit was graced by diplomats from the embassies of Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, Iran, Cuba, Costa Rica, Chile, Belarus, Gambia, Angola, Chad, Comoros, and Venezuela, among others.
On this occasion, Raimati Ghiuria, Queen of Millets from Odisha, Dr Meenakshi Gopinath, Founder and Director of WISCOMP (Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace) and Latika Bhandari, Indian Taekwondo Athlete were felicitated as BRICS CCI WE Women Icon Trailblazers.
Hailing from Koraput district, Raimati has preserved more than 30 varieties of Indian millets so far.
