OFS Officer Sasmita Lenka Bags UN’s Asia Environmental Enforcement Award

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Forest Service (OFS) officer Sasmita Lenka, who is the incumbent Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Athagarh in Cuttack district, has been awarded with the coveted “United Nations (UN)’s Asia Environmental Enforcement Award” under the Gender Leadership and Impact category.

As per reports, she would be felicitated at a virtual ceremony slated on February 17.

While Sasmita Lenka has been posted as Athagarh DFO since October 2018, she has reportedly spearheaded her team for busting the rampant live pangolin smuggling racket by apprehending over 28 persons and seizing three live pangolins as well as one dead.

Reports also said that the special forest squad led by the young DFO has also seized over 5 kgs of pangolin scales within a year spanning between August 2019 and April 2020.

The special squad of Athagarh Forest Division has also reportedly busted an international pangolin smuggling racket in December 2019 and rounded up 8-10 pangolin traffickers.
