Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought a report from the Superintendent of Police, Balangir over the alleged brutal torture of an elderly person by the OIC of Salebhata Out Post of Loisingha Police Station in Balangir district.
The OHRC issued the notice to the Balangir SP after taking suo motu cognizance of news reports published in different newspapers alleging brutal assault of a 72-year-old man by Saroj Rath OIC of Salebhata Out Post.
The elderly man following the assault reportedly lost his senses and was initially admitted to the PHC at Loisingha and then shifted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital, Balangir as his condition became critical. He was admitted to the ICU of the hospital and regained his senses after two days.
The OHRC notice quoting news reports has said that the matter involved was a civil dispute over landed property between the victim and his brother.
The victim’s brother had reportedly lodged an FIR with the police following which the victim was called to the police station and subjected to physical torture, OHRC notice stated.
The Commission has fixed December 29 as the next date for hearing in the matter and the SP Balangir has been asked to submit the report positively before that.
