Puri: Olive Ridley turtles have started laying eggs at the Krushnaprasad beach in Odisha’s Puri district. So far, the Forest department has collected 2,825 Olive Ridley eggs from Satapada, Nuapada and Rambha ranges and taken them to temporary hatcheries for safety hatching.
While 250 eggs have been collected from the Satapada range area, 407 have been from Ramabharatia beach, 637 from Arakhakuda beach, 782 from Naba beach under Ramba range, 185 from Baliamla beach and 564 from Khirisahi beach of Nupada Range.
The mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles was seen during the day after a gap of two years. Taking to his Twitter handle, IFS officer Susanta Nanda shared a video and wrote, “Odisha welcomes its annual guests… The mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles has begun at Rushikulya rookery… it’s happening in day time again, after a gap of two years. Swagatam.”
