Bhubaneswar: Since Omicron is a new variant with more than almost 30 mutations and it has been declared as a ‘variant of concern’ (VOC) by the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday so we should all be concerned and remain on alert, stated Public Health Director Dr Niranjan Mishra in his reactions on the newly detected Covid-19 variant ‘Omicron’.
Dr Mishra quoting WHO said that there is no specific data available as yet on Omicron like its infectivity, disease-causing capability and vaccine escape capacity. The WHO has sought some time to study and examine these aspects, then only it will be known how dangerous or effective it is, so all that is currently doing rounds on Omicron is speculation, he added.
“Nonetheless WHO has issued an alert that it (Omicron) should not spread,” the Public Health Director pointed out.
On being asked for his reactions with regard to the revised guidelines for the international arrivals in the wake of the new Covid variant, Omicron, Dr Mishra said, “We don’t have international flights here. Passengers arriving in other international airports like Delhi etc will test them and as per the advisory will let us know. It will come to Bhubaneswar airport and then to us”.
