OMMCOM NEWS Follow-Up: Ambiguity Over Instructions For Toys In Food Packets, Mishaps Continue Unabated

Bhubaneswar: Even as cases of children suffering from freak accidents and deaths, after consuming toys found with wafer/chips are on a rise, there is no clarity over whether such objects be allowed insides food packets.

A one-year-old toddler died in Keonjhar after swallowing a toy present inside a chips packet on June 25. OMMCOM NEWS reported and raised the matter with competent authority of the State Government.

Taking cognisance of the report, the Health Department of Odisha had sought a clarification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on whether toys in food packets are permissible.

In a response to the Health Department’s query, FSSAI’s Joint Director (Regulatory Compliance) has stated that there are no instructions issued (by the FSSAI) on toys in food packets.

The matter being serious and related to the health of young children, it remains to be seen, whether the Health Department issues any advisory or guideline for regulating the sale of food packets with toys inside.
