Cuttack: In a significant breakthrough in the Nuapada Press Colony murder case, Commissionerate Police arrested one accused on Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Soumya Ranjan Jena (alias Rinku) that occurred on Wednesday evening.
Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari revealed that the incident took place around 3:30 pm in an abandoned government quarter where four individuals, including the victim, were consuming alcohol during a feast. A heated argument, fuelled by drunken condition and possible prior disputes (including a past relationship with the deceased), escalated suddenly.
The accused fired at close range in a fit of anger, causing severe bleeding and injury to vital organs, leading to Jena’s death despite medical efforts at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Police recovered drugs, a pistol, liquor bottles, and cartridge cases from the scene, along with CCTV footage and scientific evidence. Statements from those who shifted the victim to hospital have been recorded.
While one person has been arrested by Madhupatna police, the main accused remains at large. Multiple teams are conducting a manhunt with important clues in hand. DCP Khilari stated that if more individuals are found involved, strict action will follow.
