Koraput: Ten days after a woman was gang raped by two miscreants after holding her husband and son hostage at gunpoint in a village under Jeypore Sadar police limits in Koraput district, the police have succeeded in arresting one of the accused persons.
According to reports, the accused has been identified as one Mina Barik of Kusumput under Jeypore Sadar police limits. While Barik was arrested from the Padua forest, the other accused Bahadur Darjee is still at large.
The police today after getting a medical examination of Barik done at the district headquarters hospital have forwarded him to court.
While the BJP had observed a shutdown in Jeypore demanding arrest of the culprits in the gang rape case, the Congress had staged a mass dharna in front of the SDPO’s and had blocked the national highway.
Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati had threatened the Home Department to observe Koraput bandh on January 7 and gherao Naveen Nivas (Odisha CM’s residence on failure to arrest the culprits.
On the midnight of December 24 last, two miscreants broke into the victim’s house in a village under Jeypore Sadar police limits through the backyard while she, her husband and son were fast asleep. The miscreants thrashed the victim’s husband before holding him and his son hostage at gunpoint.
While one of the accused held the victim’s husband and son hostage at gunpoint, the other accused raped her. They took turns to rape the victim who is about 25 years of age.
The miscreants who are youths assaulted the woman when she resisted them.
The couple informed the villagers of their ordeal and with their help filed a complaint at the Jeypore Mahila police station.
The matter came to the fore after a complaint was filed at the Jeypore Mahila police station on December 26.
The Koraput District Lawyers’ Association has announced that none of its members will defend Barik.
