One Child Killed, 2 Others Seriously Injured As School Gate Collapses In Kandhamal

Phulbani: In a tragic incident, an eight-year-old child was killed and two others of the same age were seriously injured when the gate of a primary school collapsed on them in Raikia block in Kandhamal district today.

According to reports, while the distribution of mosquito nets was underway today at the Anganwadi centre at the primary school in Belkati village of Petapanga panchayat under Raikia block, three students of the same school which is now closed for the Covid pandemic were playing with the school’s gate when it collapsed on them.

One of the students, a female child Risika Pradhan (8) died on the spot. Two others Subhashree Pradhan (8) and Ritesh Pradhan (8) who sustained have critical injuries were first rushed to the Government Hospital at G Udayagiri were later shifted to the district headquarters hospital here as their condition deteriorated. All the students are of Class-III.

Following the incident Petapanga sarpanch Pravakar Pradhan, Raikia Block Junior Engineer and Cluster Resource Coordinator (CRC) rushed to the spot.

“The school is run by the Education Department. It is closed for the pandemic. Children were playing when the gate’s pillar collapsed on them. One of them died on the spot. Two others have been grievously hurt and have been hospitalized. The mishap occurred while they were playing with the gate and distribution of mosquito nets was underway at the Anganwadi centre in its premises,” said an official.

“We were at the Anganwadi centre where mosquito nets were being given. They were playing when the gate collapsed on them. One child died on the spot, two others were injured,” said a local woman who was at the Anganwadi centre.
