Bhubaneswar: Rourkela excise department claimed to have busted a major illicit liquor trading racket with seizure of huge quantities of contraband items and packing materials from a person in Bonaigarh area near Rourkela in Sundergarh district on Tuesday.
The seized liquor is estimated to be of Rs 4 lakh, reports said.
Excise DSE (Deputy Superintendent of Excise) Archana Barik was tipped off about about the illegal trade at Bhangadihi of Bonaigarh area in Sundergarh.
Later, a special team-led by Barik went to the village this morning. At that time, liquor was being transported from a car to a scooter in the village. The team captured the liquor mafia identified as Balabhadra Patra and seized illicit liquor, a car, scooty and mobile phones from him.
The raiding team also seized bottles, labels and stickers of various companies. According to Rourkela DSE Archana Barik, Balabhadra Patra used to bring illicit liquor from Jharkhand and supplied to various hotels, eateries and resorts after packing them.
The accused has admitted that he used to supply the liquor to various hotels and road side eateries in Sundergarh and Deogarh districts.
