Khurda: Four persons were killed on the spot and four others sustained critical injuries in an explosion while making firecrackers in a house on the outskirts of Bhushundpur village under Tangi police station limits in Odisha’s Kurdha district at around 11.00 am on Monday.
The explosion took place when Hotkeshwar Behera, the main worker, along with 12 to 15 members of his family was making firecrackers for the Dol Purnima celebrations on Tuesday. The explosion was so severe that three houses in the locality were completely destroyed.
While four people engaged in making firecrackers died on the spot, four others were admitted to the Khurda District General Hospital. Later, one of the injured was shifted to Bhubaneswar as his condition deteriorated. The condition of others in Tangi Hospital is also said to be critical.
The Khurda District Magistrate informed that no permission was been given by the district administration for making firecrackers in the house on government land.
The injured have been taken to the Tangi Medical Center, while the severely burnt bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem.
A pall of gloom descended on the village and neighbouring areas after the fatal accident.
Police have reached the village and investigating the case. While the cause of the explosion is not clear yet, police are of the view that overheating the firecrackers may be responsible for the calamity.
