Berhampur: One victim of spurious liquor poisoning who was undergoing treatment at the ICU of the MKCG Medical College and Hospital breathed his last late Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as Zur Behera, a native of Chikti Jenapur.
According to reports, the condition of two other victims is still critical and they are undergoing treatment at the ICU of the hospital. As many as 15 persons, all residents of Moundpur village under K. Nuaga police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district, fell ill after consuming hooch on Monday night.
Seven people have been arrested in this connection and 55 litres of country liquor have been seized during subsequent raids by the police and Excise department. All the arrested have been forwarded to jail after their bail petitions were rejected.
Meanwhile, the villagers of Chikti-Jenapur staged a demonstration with the body of the deceased on Wednesday demanding Rs 20 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to the sick. The agitators also demanded a complete ban on liquor in Ganjam district.
