Bhubaneswar: In a horrific incident, a young woman was killed, and two others were critically injured after a car ran over them while they were standing on the verandah of their house in Nunhada village, under Belpada block in the Patnagarh sub-division of Balangir district on Tuesday.
Following the mishap, locals blocked the Patnagarh-Kantabanji main road in protest.
According to reports, Suresh Sahu, a dhaba owner, was driving from the Belpada side when his car ran over three sisters — Baleswari Majhi, Pratima Majhi, and Demati Majhi — who were chatting while standing on the verandah of their house.
The three sisters, who were critically injured in the accident, were initially rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Belpada. Due to the severity of their injuries, they were later shifted to the Patnagarh Sub-Divisional Hospital. However, doctors at the Patnagarh hospital declared Baleswari dead on arrival.
Pratima and Demati were subsequently transferred to Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital as their conditions worsened.
Upon hearing the news of Baleswari’s death, relatives and villagers gathered to block the Patnagarh-Kantabanji main road, demanding the arrest of the driver responsible for the accident and compensation for the family of the deceased.
