Malkangiri: In an attempt to curb the crunch due to skyrocketing onion prices the Food Supplies department allowed local Self Help Groups (SHG) to sell onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 50 per kilogram.
The onion prices have touched Rs 70-80 per kilogram across Odisha, leading to worries about food inflation and consumer unrest as climate change reality hits hard.
To handle the high-pressure situation, the Food Supplies department of the Naveen-led government has been supplying the women SHGs with onions at a reduced rate. The women take the onions and sell them at a discounted price across the district.
A total of eight SHGs have been given the permission. The women first sold the much-needed vegetable outside the Food Supplies department district office and then later set-up temporary stalls at various places of Malkangiri.
The innovative move has brought great relief to customers in a time where onion prices across India have soared to eye-watering heights. The move was also greatly appreciated by the members of SHGs.
