Onkar Singh Dhillon Does A Ekla Cholo Re

Berhampur: Silk City-Berhampur had an unusual visitor today-Onkar Singh Dhillon, a man from distant Uttarakhand pulling along a cart affixed with two tricolours flying high and with posters plastered on all sides.

Onkar is on a padayatra seeking a ban on the use of EVMs to save democracy, his only mission- ban on the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections which are subject to manipulation and have killed democracy. His endeavour reminds one of Rabindranath Tagore’s famous Bengali patriotic song, “Jodi Tor Dak Shune Keu Na Ase Tobe Ekla Cholo Re” (“If no one responds to your call, then go your own way alone)”

The posters on his cart say says: “Ban EVM Save Democracy”.

Onkar, who appears to be in his early 50s, his beard a motley mix of white, grey and black blames manipulation of EVMs for the current state of affairs in the country.

He says that had EVMs been not used, the current dictatorial regime at Centre would not have come to power.

“I believe that the EVMs should be banned. Because a government that is formed by stealing votes cannot be good for the country nor can it do any good to its citizens either,” said Onkar speaking to newsmen here.

Onkar who started his padayatra on August 18 last year from Uttarakhand has already travelled a 4,000 km on foot and intends to cover over 6,000 km to reach Rajghat in Delhi.

He claims that he reached Odisha today through Andhra Pradesh and has already traversed through UP, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamilnadu. He has planned to reach Delhi after passing through Jharkhand, West Bengal Bihar and UP after Odisha.

“The present bad situation in our country, the dictatorial behaviour of the government, this is all due to the EVMs. Had the people voted, those in power could not have been dictatorial as it is happening today,” Onkar said.

Onkar tells anyone who meets him on his journey that they (people) have to come out on the streets to awaken this dictatorial regime.

“People have to come out on the streets, to awaken this dictatorial government. The country’s situation is bad. It’s high time, today the situation is 10% when it will be 100%, people will be killing one another and eating their flesh. It’s not far-off, if this government remains in power for another 3-4 years this will happen,” he adds.
