**Cuttack: ** While the ongoing lawyers’ cease-work has reached its threshold and the people are suffering for the last two months, the BJD Legal Front today announced its withdrawal and have decided to attend court proceedings from Monday (October 29).
Convening a press meet here today, senior advocate and BJD Legal Front vice-president Asim Amitav Das said, “Gheraoing Naveen Niwas and planning to burn effigy of Naveen Patnaik is political interest and clearly smacks of politics. The strike of the lawyers is never political, history says. But in the ongoing strike, politicization is teeming. We disapprove the wrong resolution adopted in the general body.”
“The main reason behind our resuming work is that for the last two months, bail hearing has been stalled. The poor people are unable to get justice from the court for the last two months. No body is getting judicial remedy to his or her problem,” he maintained.
Senior advocate and BJD Legal Front convenor Milan Kanungo said, “The strike was there because of an advocate movement. Suddenly before the Puja holidays, it has turned into a political movement. When our elected representatives demanded that two cops to be arrested, the Government arrested two. They had assured of recalling the strike after the arrest of the two. But, this matter was never discussed in the general body.”
He claimed, “I had raised the point in the general body meeting. No response was from our elected representatives. I had warned against politicization saying the BJD Legal Front will walk out of the strike.”
“Now we’re walking out of the strike for four reasons. First is politicization of the entire movement. Second reason is that the High Court judges had requested to call off ceasework and had assured justice. By not returning to work, we’re actually insulting the High Court. Third reason is that of sufferings of the general public across the State. Fourth reason is that of an advocate can cooperate with an advocate cause not for a political cause,” he explained.
He also said, “I appeal to all the members of the BJD Legal Front across the State to withdraw from the movement. I appeal to all like-minded lawyers who think that public interest is suffering should join work.”
