Koraput: Casteism, religious beliefs, traditions and rituals are deep-rooted among the tribal communities.
Villagers of Bairagimath village under Jeypore block in Koraput district stayed away from joining hands in cremating the body of an elderly woman whose son had taken food in the house of a person belonging to a different caste.
According to reports, six months back deceased woman Mukta Paraja’s son Mangla Paraja had taken food at the house of a person from a different caste.
Following the incident, Mangla’s family had to face social boycott. The family was not allowed to attend village feasts.
Today when Mangla’s mother Mukta died, none from the village turned up to carry the corpse to the cremation ground.
Left with no option Mangla dragged his mother’s body to the cremation ground. Later he was joined by his wife, and the couple got the body cremated.
