Bhubaneswar: The city woke up to the shocking news of the suicide of an Assistant Professor at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology on Friday. The deceased, Basanti Jena was working at the Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, College Of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry.
She was found hanging late last night at OUAT staff quarters where she used to live with her husband and their six-year-old son. Her husband Debi Prasanna Das is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology of OUAT. The couple was in a love relationship since 2004 and got married in 2012.
While Khandagiri police have registered a case of unnatural death in this matter, all angles are being probed to ascertain the reason behind Jena taking the extreme step. According to reports, Das and his son were away when the mishap took place. The father-son duo had gone out and after returning home, they spotted the door to be locked.
After getting into the quarter, Das spotted his wife hanging from the ceiling following which he reported the matter to police. According to reports, the woman had dialed emergency number 100 before committing suicide. Besides, she had also spoken to her father for about 45 minutes prior to taking the extreme step.
According to Jena’s family members, there was some sort domestic/marital issues which she had confided with her father. She was also disturbed about the health issues of her son. However, Jena had applied for higher studies in the USA and her application was under processing, reports added. Her family is smelling foul in Jena ending her life, reports added.
Meanwhile, Khandagiri police have sent the body of the deceased for autopsy to Capital Hospital. “We are awaiting the post-mortem reports to ascertain the cause of death. Investigation in this case has started and we are questioning the family members, neighbours and people who were closely linked to the deceased,” a police official said.
