Sambalpur: Sambalpur police have seized 16,320 bottles of Wincerex cough syrup and arrested 33 persons in this connection in the last two days.
According to the police, while 10,800 bottles of Wincerex cough syrup were seized at Nildungri field near Padiabahal village under Sambalpur Sadar police limits on Sunday, another 5,520 bottles of the same brand of cough syrup were seized at Taxi Stand, Sahu Colony under Sambalpur Town police limits.
Out of the 33 arrested, as many as 26 were arrested on Sunday, while 7 others were arrested on Monday.
Police have also seized a total of two trucks, one SUV, two cars, two autorickshaws, one scooter, two bikes, 17 mobile phones and Rs 20,000 in cash in connection with the two cases.
The seized cough syrup bottles contain codeine phosphate and triprolidine hydrochloride.
Acting on reliable information regarding the procurement of a huge quantity of cough syrup from West Bengal on the eve of Holi festival and the upcoming General Election police intercepted the vehicles leading to the seizures.
Police have registered two separate cases -one each at Sambalpur Sadar and Sambalpur Town police stations under section 21(C)/29 of the NDPS Act.
