Bhubaneswar: A total of 2,29,062 aspirants have filed their nomination papers to contest in the three-tier panchayat elections scheduled in the State from February 16.
According to information shared by State Election Commission (SEC) Secretary R N Sahu, a total of 1,62,297 candidates have filed papers for the post of Ward Members, 34,613 for Sarpanchs, 2,81,537 for Panchayat Samiti members, and 3,999 for Zilla Parishad members.
Today being the concluding day for filing of nomination, 65,838 filed papers for the posts of Ward Member, 14074 for Sarpanch, 125127 for Panchayat Samiti Member and 2161 for Zilla Parishad Member, Sahu informed.
Nomination papers will be scrutinized tomorrow (January 22). Candidates can withdraw their nomination by January 25 and the final list of candidates will be issued on the same day.
Elections will be held in five phases on February 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24.
