Bhubaneswar: Over 50 protesters were detained in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday following a statewide bandh called by farmers’ organisation Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS). The bandh is in protest against alleged irregularities in paddy procurement.
“The protesters involved in the bandh have been detained and temporarily held at the Reserve Office detention centre. Their leader has also been detained. The situation in the city is currently normal. Any splinter groups attempting to disrupt public order will also be detained,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena while speaking to the media.
The bandh, which began early morning, has seen farmers demonstrating on major city roads. NKS convenor Akshay Kumar clarified that the bandh will not affect railways or emergency services. However, the organisation has appealed to business and commercial establishments to keep their shutters down during the protest.
