Bhubaneswar: A total of 53,551 people have died in road accidents over the past 10 years in Odisha, the Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the state assembly on Monday.
In a written reply to a question by BJD leader and Jatani MLA Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray, the Chief Minister provided a detailed account of road accident statistics from 2016 to 2025. During this period, 61,186 people sustained grievous injuries, while 45,146 suffered minor injuries. A total of 113,325 accident cases were registered across the state during the same period.
Focusing on the period between 2022 and 2025, Majhi stated that 185 persons were convicted for deaths caused by negligence, 4,266 were acquitted, and 189,191 cases are still pending trial.
The Chief Minister also explained that complaints are registered as cases progress. The Holding Investigating Officer (HIO) oversees timely and proper investigations, and independent prosecutors are appointed when necessary to manage the conduct of cases. Majhi added that the public courts are working to dispose of cases expeditiously, ensuring justice is delivered promptly.
