Bhubaneswar: A total of 8506 persons have reportedly drowned in the State during the years 2016 to 2021, informed Minister of State for Home, Tusharkanti Behera, in a written reply to the query of BJP MLA Sukanta Kumar Nayak on Monday.
The data presented by the Minister stated that 935 drowning cases were reported in 2016 with the highest 121 cases reported from Cuttack Urban Police District.
A total of 1079 drowning cases were reported in 2017 with the highest 90 cases reported from Mayurbhanj. In 2018, the number of drowning cases was 1406 with the highest number of 123 cases reported again from Mayurbhanj.
In 2019, the number of drowning cases was 1441, in 2020 it was 1840 and in 2021 it was 1805. The highest number of cases in these three years was again reported from Mayurbhanj i.e 104, 152, and 167 respectively.
