Malkangiri: A major mishap was narrowly averted at the Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Thursday after a lift wire snapped due to overloading. The lift, with a capacity of 10–12 persons, was carrying as many as 27 individuals at the time of the incident while moving from the first floor to the second floor.
The alarm was immediately raised, and hospital technical staff along with security personnel manually opened the lift to rescue the trapped patients and their relatives. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.
Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) Dr. Brajakishore Das informed that the lift will remain out of service until necessary repairs are carried out. A mechanic from Visakhapatnam has been called in and is expected to arrive on Friday to fix the fault.
Hospital sources revealed that this is not the first such incident, as patients and attendants have been stranded in the lift on multiple occasions in the past, raising serious concerns over safety and maintenance at the district hospital.
