Dhenkanal: In yet another man-animal conflict, an old man from Balikiyari village was killed in an elephant attack under the Hindol forest range in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Lakshmidhar Sahu of Balikiyari village.
According to reports, Lakshmindar was attacked by an elephant that had strayed into the village from the nearby Hindol forest range when he had gone to a pond near his village to defecate in the early hours of Friday. The elephant trampled him to death on the spot.
On being informed about the incident, Hindol forest department personnel and a team from Rasoli police station reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem.
A few days ago, an elephant had killed a person from Gurillo village in the same region when he had gone to pick cashew nuts.
It is worth mentioning here that Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik increased the compensation for deaths in man-animal conflicts to Rs 6 lakh from the previous Rs 4 lakh on May 23.
