Bhubaneswar: Centenarian teacher Padma Shri Nanda Prusty, who was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, passed away on Tuesday.

The 102-year-old teacher, popularly known as ‘Nanda Sir’ or ‘Nanda Mastre’, had collapsed in his house at Kantira village in Jajpur district on November 29. He had been rushed to the district headquarters hospital where he was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Following it, he was shifted to the Tata Steel Medica Hospital, a designated Covid Hospital, at Gobarghati of Jajpur district. His condition was reported to be critical and he is on oxygen support.

Three days later, he was brought to Bhubaneswar and admitted to a private hospital. As per hospital authorities, he breathed his last at 1.28 PM today.

It is worthwhile to mention that, Prusty had received the Padma Shri from President Ram Nath Kovind at Delhi on November 9. It was a heart-warming moment when Nanda Sir raised his hands to bless President Ram Nath Kovind during the Padma Awards ceremony.

While the centenraian teacher received the honour for his contributions in the field of education, a photograph of Prusty blessing President Kovind after getting the award had gone viral on social media.

Prusty dedicated himself to providing free education for children and adults in Jajpur in Odisha. His main goal was to eradicate illiteracy in his village. He has been teaching both children and senior citizens in his village free of charge since the past several decades and wishes to remove illiteracy.
