Bhubaneswar: A pall of gloom enveloped Palasia village in Balasore district following the death of a 20-year-old B.Ed. student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, who had attempted self-immolation on campus after allegedly facing repeated sexual harassment by her Head of Department.
The student, Soumyashree Bisi, succumbed to her injuries late Monday night at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
According to reports, the student had sustained over 90 per cent burn injuries after she set herself on fire outside the principal’s office on July 12, reportedly in protest against inaction by the college authorities despite multiple complaints. She was shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in a critical condition, where she died two days later.
As news of her death spread, shock and outrage gripped her native village. Locals and relatives blamed the college administration and government authorities for their alleged apathy, stating that the victim had raised complaints with the Higher Education Minister, Chief Minister, local MP, MLA, and police officials, but no steps were taken.
“The government is responsible for her death,” said her grieving grandfather. “She pleaded for help at every level, but no one listened.”
“This incident will make girls think twice before pursuing higher education,” said a relative. “What message are we sending to those who dream of a brighter future?”
Locals remembered Soumyashree as a determined and studious girl. Her tragic death has triggered a wave of anger across the state, with student groups and women’s organisations demanding immediate action against the accused and accountability from the institution.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice, with many demanding a judicial probe and immediate suspension of those responsible for alleged negligence.
