Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned till 4.00 pm on Thursday following a ruckus created by the opposition BJP and Congress members over the Mahanadi water dispute issue.
Soon after the House met for business today, Opposition MLAs raised the Mahanadi water dispute issue and accused the state government of its alleged failure in keeping its promise of constructing barrages. The Opposition also criticised the government for failing to resolve the dispute amicably. They alleged that the Mahanadi has dried up owing to the “callous” attitude of the Odisha government
The BJP members sought a thorough discussion on all issues related to the Mahanadi dispute, including the state government’s initiative to resolve the water dispute, through a special motion in the House by suspending Question Hour.
On the other hand, Congress members held the Central government as well as the state government responsible for the receding water level in the Mahanadi. They also demanded a discussion and the state government’s reply on the issue.
Shouting slogans, the Opposition members rushed into the Well of the House paralysing the proceedings of the House. Consequently, Speaker Bikram Keshari adjourned the House till 4 pm.
