Nabarangpur: Nabarangpur police on Friday arrested three persons on charges of smuggling a rare Indian pangolin. The accused have been identified as Shantiraj Ganda, Babula Pattnaik and Ashok Majhi of Dengaguda village under Jeypore police limits in Koraput district.
According to the police, the accused are involved in a pangolin smuggling racket which delivers the animal to traders in Raipur (Chhattisgarh). The animal which was seized from their possession weighs around 13 kgs and is valued at Rs 5 lakh in the grey market.
Nabarangpur SP, Nitin Kulsekar said that the raid was conducted at Dengaguda village and police are interrogating the arrested persons to unearth their links with gangs operating in and outside Odisha.
The raid was carried out on the basis of a tip-off on the movement of this racket in Dengaguda village. Following the search operation, they rescued a scaled animal. Sources said, it would have been smuggled further from Raipur by racketeers outside India.
