Bhubaneswar: Past enmity is the reason behind the murder of a homeless man in front of the Odisha Assembly in Bhubaneswar, as revealed by the two persons who have been arrested in this connection.
The accused persons identified as Rajesh Mahapatra alias Raja of Ganjam, and Ajay Rout alias Gedu of Dhenkanal were close to the deceased Babulu Behera.
Babulu, his wife Puja Behera, and their minor son used to stay on the verandah of the India Post ATM near the PMG office here for the last few months.
During their stay here, Babulu had come in contact with the accused persons who worked as daily labourers. They were also homeless and used to stay on the footpath.
Reportedly, a fight had broken out between the accused persons and Babulu’s family on the afternoon of April 10. Babulu and his wife used filthy language against Raja and Gedu.
Later at around 1 am on Sunday night, the accused persons arranged an iron rod and attacked Babulu when he was fast asleep. As Puja woke up during the act, they also attacked her.
Following it, they left the spot believing that both of them are dead. The murder weapon has been recovered by Commissionerate Police from a nearby bush.
The accused persons were nabbed by police while they were planning to escape to Chennai. During the investigation, it was revealed that both are history-sheeters.
