Bhadrak: Performing the funeral rites of poor and abandoned persons has become the passion of a goldsmith from Kuansa village in Bhadrak district.
Sufal Sahu (51) of Kuansa has been earning his livelihood as a goldsmith but has always been involved in cremating the bodies of the poor and needy. He considers it a service to God.
Till date, he has performed the funeral rites of around 194 persons. However, he does not take any money from anyone. Whenever he is called, he leaves all the work behind and goes for such service.
Sahu continued providing this service even during the Covid-19 pandemic.
There is a tragedy behind his passion. While visiting a hospital one day, he had seen a poor mother begging a rickshaw driver to take the dead body of her child to her home as she had little money to pay for it.
This moved Sahu and he for the first time performed the last rites of the child with his own resources. Sahu’s family including his wife and four daughters support him in his choices. He is also praised by all for his deeds.
