Berhampur/Kalahandi/Malkangiri: As voters of Odisha exercised their franchise to elect their representatives for both Lok Sabha and Assembly today in the first phase polls, OMMCOM NEWS tried to find out what issues are priority for the people. Shedding light on a wide range of problems, an aware voter in Kalahandi said, “In last 19 years, several development projects have been undertaken by the Government. Road, health, education, everything has improved. So accordingly, I have cast my vote.”
Another elderly man said, “Kalahandi is the land of farmers. It is also one of the backward districts and there are several poor people. So, farmers’ welfare, poor people’s upliftment and national security are the three main issues for me.”
In Malkangiri, a young voter said, “I voted keeping the candidate of this area in mind. This is a tribal area and I want my elected representative to keep in touch with tribals and learn about their problems. They should be approachable so that government facilities reach the people.”
Another cried for change and said, “I voted for good leadership who can bring new developments.” Other said, “We want our candidates to work for betterment of education and health in our city and Sahi (local area).”
In Berhampur, Swatilekha Sahoo wants development and Santosh Mohapatra wants ‘Parivartan’ (change). “I voted for those people who I know will work for us.” On the other hand, Dr Debasis Sahoo said, “I voted for those who will work for employment of youth and will also deal with local problems.” Meanwhile, the women talked about safety issues and empowerment and the first-time voters focused more on education and jobs.
With myriad of issues at hand, the 2019 simultaneous elections are set to prove to the leaders that winning the hearts of voters is not a cakewalk.
